Many copper line service providers are no longer supporting copper telephone line service (POTS). Instead, they would give you a locked VOIP account, or sell you an ATA that would connect to the cellular network. In turn, they would charge you an extremely high amount for this service. If you have 1MBPS, and a latency of less than 100ms, then you can have a VOIP line. A VOIP line will replace your home phone service for a price that might be cheaper than the other options. Service will be $10/month, and give you all of the options noted in this site with exception of SMS/RCS. You are able to get a toll-free number, but you will pay for incoming calls ranging from 2¢ – 25¢ per minute (depending on area code origin). Toll-free numbers can only be called from the US, Canada, and select territories (with +1). You would need a regular telephone number for other countries to reach you by phone.
As with cellular phone plans, my phone service will not sell you an ATA/VOIP Phone. You would be required to provide that on your own. You would be provided with the set up information when you acquire a VOIP service plan. This information will be delivered to you via email. You would also be required to provide an E911 address, and while the service can technically work anywhere in the world, my phone service will only support customers in the US where there is also cellular service.
